چکیده

The bandwidth of LIGO-like terrestrial interferometric gravitational wave detectors is set by the pole of the Fabry–Perot cavities within the arms of the Michelson interferometer. This constraint arises because the gain of gravitational wave-induced signal sidebands is limited to frequencies within the linewidth of the cavities. The nature of standard Fabry–Perot cavities is such that one cannot independently adjust for increased gain without suffering a loss of bandwidth. If these quantities could be decoupled, the resulting improvement in bandwidth may lead to viable high frequency detectors. A pair of anti-parallel diffraction gratings within a Fabry–Perot cavity can increase the bandwidth of a LIGO-scale detector by a factor of ≈1000. PACS number: 04.80.Nn

Dynamic resonance of light in Fabry–Perot cavities

The dynamics of light in Fabry–Perot cavities with varying length and input laser frequency are analyzed. At high frequencies, the response to length variations is very different from the response to laser frequency variations. Implications for kilometerscale Fabry–Perot cavities such as those utilized in gravitational-wave detectors are discussed.  2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserv...

Experimental demonstration of a suspended, diffractively coupled Fabry–Perot cavity

Diffraction gratings have been considered as input couplers for Fabry–Perot cavities in future gravitational wave detectors. We experimentally demonstrate the use of a triple-suspended, diffractively coupled cavity and examine conventional Pound–Drever–Hall length sensing and control techniques to maintain the required operating condition. Utilizing the diffractively coupled Fabry–Perot cavity,...

Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory

We propose a method for in situ measurement of the length of kilometer size Fabry-Perot cavities in laser gravitational wave detectors. The method is based on the vernier, which occurs naturally when the laser incident on the cavity has a sideband. By changing the length of the cavity over several wavelengths we obtain a set of carrier resonances alternating with sideband resonances. From the m...

Optical Torques in Suspended Fabry-Perot Interferometers

High-power Fabry-Perot cavities with suspended mirrors are employed in gravitational wave detection. The mirrors in such interferometers are subject to forces and torques that are exerted by light pressure. This article derives a closed-form expression for the static torsional stiffness due to this effect. The torsional stiffness is shown to scale as the fourth power of the beam spot size. In p...
